Everything living continually evolves
even the blanket of life we call the universe

 



Does it boggle your mind that over 90% of the galaxies in the universe have yet to be noticed by our keen human eyes?. Even so, there they are, feeding ancient light and photons to our planets every oldest living thing, unknown and unnoticed by us.
Up there, in the sky, from far outside the reach of Planet Earth, they are the light that paints our day. Light that has traveled from distant clusters of stars through dark and matter for millions and in some cases, even, billions of years towards our magnetic field that shelters life down here, photons that caress and bounce their way through the atmosphere, clouds, and water.

And down here, the old trees of this world soak it all up. They reach up towards the dark organic space above as they pull organic life and matter, and energy from alien worlds and transform it to earthbound life and energy.









The moist in the air, the pollution we create, the water from deep within the core of Earth.









They devour the nutrients in light, warmth, and photons from us humans and far away worlds and stars. Individual trees that in rare cases rooted as early as the end of the last ice age, 10 000 years ago.












Yet somehow, they continue to thrive, as they defy the end to our individual cycle of life, these ancient trees replenish and pull back from the slow breakdown of life that snapped so many other living organisms from the gates of breathing, living things. And in doing so, they act as biological islands feeding a complex and ancient ecosystem with a unique lifeforce of their own.












They are not parasites that steal land and energy, and life from the surrounding world, no, they are ancient sentinels, providing and protecting a chain of life that is far too unique and rare in our modern world.













Each proud tree that stands tall and mighty above ground might look like a perfect individual tree to us, a tree which at rare times can live for more than a 1000 years. Europe has one such tree in Greece, and others like it in Sweden ( a gigantic fairy tale oak, as old as the swords of Vikings, complete with a man-sized room growing straight through it ) and in England, you can find other 1000-year-old trees.














But the mighty ancient thing we see above ground is not the end of the tree, it is just one part of a living and thriving biological network.
Each individual tree is in truth its very own ecosystem for thousands of animals, and each tree also connects to and communicates with all the other trees that surround them.














As such, when life cut down the upper body of one tree, sometimes that just isn't the end of the story for that tree, and instead, that little hump that life left behind continues to live as new branches strangely slow start growing, all while moss and mushrooms claim it as their own humpback formed meadow.

Even more fascinating perhaps.














All the trees and their mutual ecosystem that it used to be a living and thriving part of, might decide to continue feeding their humpback friend nutrition and life.
Nursing their battle-wounded friend back to life.















A matter of fact that at times result in a beautifully resilient generation-spanning tree which might loose dozens of upper bodies, but the roots of the very first tree, the ancient seed and core if you so will, they just refuse to die, and instead of caving in that core will perpetually send new upper bodies up above soil to feed on the sun for tens of thousands of years.















Sort of like how we lose and grow new hair and fur :P.













Several such death-defying conifers grow in the cold north of Sweden, having rooted at the end of the last ice age 10 000 years ago. And does that not make you wonder if those trees will outlast us all.












And perhaps one day, if we fast forward our train of thought just a little, to a point where we traverse the universe as an interplanetary species, back home on Earth these trees will, undisturbed by us and our worthlessly reckless society, continue to live for millions of years. And perhaps one day as we sail across distant stars and oceans, we will talk about our distant home with its trees that have lived for as long as the light of far away suns traveled to reach us.














But this real-life fairy tale does not end with that, because beneath these gnarly old trees another world hides in waiting, unobscured and unseen by our human eye.













Sometimes, deep down, down under the soil and the roots of our old sentinel's gigantic ecosystems grow in turn. Not the roots of the trees, but another ecosystem, another living organism that feeds off of the trees, growing and breathing in perpetual synchronization with Earths wooden giants.














The biggest such living thing which we currently know of is the mushroom called Armillaria Ostoyae.














Well, let us backtrack, just for a few brief moments. Back to the very first paragraph of this article, and the 90+% of the universe which we still haven't even noticed.














You see, the universe is in constant flux.













Stars and planets, black holes and moons, they give rise to new planetary babies, they kill, devour, swallow and merge, so as we progress, think of the universe as a living breathing organic thing, planets and all.













Because, what once was, might tomorrow be something entirely new.














The stars we look up at during night actually move, they dim, they grow bright, and their shape and mass will change too, they multiply, divide, shrink and die.
Add to that our ever-growing scientific understanding of life and the universe.













It wasn't until very recently that we realized that the universe we can see and think we know, have trillions of more galaxies than we had previously understood.














And as you let that number sink in you have to keep in mind a few scientific realities of our own lack of knowledge. It is easy to think that what we knew 30 years ago was a constant, unmovable fact, but that´s not how science or our ever-changing and evolving life work at all.












You see, the observable universe which we base our scientific knowledge on is by itself only a thin slice of the actual thing.












We simply do not have the technology to observe more of it right now, and beyond our lack of better technology, nature itself works against our knowledge about the universe.












Well, what I actually mean is that the nature of time and distance is for now making sure that out of that thin slice we should think of as the observable universe, we can right now only measure and look at less than 10% simply put because neither is the technology good enough yet, but light and other transmissions have also not had enough time to reach us from all the other 90%+ parts of the universe.














So, not only is that organic thing called life & the universe constantly evolving and changing. But we also constantly increase our scientific knowledge about life, in fact, for every second that tick away we get to see a little bit more of that incredibly vast uncharted mass that no human eyes have ever witnessed.














And every moment brings with it that ephemeral first when we lift the factual real-life veil and look back at the sounds and light, radiation and transmissions from millions of year old moments.















“It boggles the mind that over 90% of the galaxies in the universe have yet to be studied.”
Think about those words for a brief few seconds. Words that mirror my own thoughts and writing but uttered by scientist Christopher Conselice instead of me.












And as you pause for a brief few seconds in your busy day, just imagine how much real life stuff we have yet to discover about the universe, just look at how much we are currently and recently revealing about our own little milky way galaxy and planet. And then, multiply that with trillions of trillions of galaxies.












Add to that this simple reality.
Each galaxy is a biological cluster of life and millions, if not billions of stars.












Sort of like our trees, old and new, down here on planet Earth.
And beneath those trees, we have that other giant ecosystem, the one of ants and mushrooms, burrowing worms and tiny little things that live down in the soil. Underground dwellers that feed and replenish our entire planet with fresh life-giving soil.










Armillaria Ostoyae is the name of one of those hidden basement dwelling worlds. It is, in fact, the largest known organism in the world, and it is spreading its own roots as it feeds off of the trees above in Oregon, USA.










This particular mushroom meadow is approaching almost 2400 acres in size, all on its lonesome self.
Just like a galaxy.












Well, almost at least. Vast ever growing, changing, evolving. Living and breathing. Not on its own isolated self, but together with the trees. In symbiosis, feeding, killing, giving birth, dividing and multiplying.









Every single day, we see more of the universe, and we learn more about it.
And we also learn more about life on this planet, we see more of it. And we understand more of how life on Earth functions and connect to the rest of the universe.











And the more we see, the more we understand just how complex and fascinating and connected our entire living, breathing, organic universe actually is.
We have learned that apex predators are not our enemy down on Earth. They might be scary, but like the old, forlorn trees of this planet, they too are essential for maintaining a properly working world.













We have learned about the ways we impact this planet in disastrous ways. The negativity of our human impact on natures natural climate cycles. The way we destroy our soil and oceans. The way we have wiped out more than 60% of wild animals in less than 40 years.













Some will shield their heart and minds to this knowledge as if facing our changing reality in truthful observation and acknowledgment somehow makes life unlivable.













But the truth is that science and life is a marvelous thing. And that ever-growing knowledge is not to be feared, the unknown is always out there, and it is simply what it is, no matter how it twists and turns.













And the more we uncover, the more we learn and the wiser we grow, the better we can live in harmony with that gigantic ecosystem which the universe really is. Every part balances with all the others, down here on Earth and out there far beyond the observable universe.














Science teaches us how to do it, no matter if we are talking about the building blocks for life on other planets or climate change and the negative impact of fossil fuel and unsustainable living down here on Earth.














Science is not the enemy, and it is not something to hide and run from, because the wise thing to do is, of course, to always evolve with our growing knowledge and to do that, we all have to acknowledge the way that life is and the way it constantly changes.













Right now, we´ll I am not so sure that our ancient tree sentinels will be around for much longer. Quite a lot of people out there just doesn't seem ready to actually pollute less and live more sustainable. Instead, they are hiding from the reality that stares them in the face.













They hide from technology and old wisdom alike.
Not wanting to see the way things are, it is an old human trait. But we know better today. We know that 300 Swedish wolves aren't to be blamed for the unsustainable way of humanity, or the need to go plant-based in our food choices.













Wolves and other apex predators are not the reason why more than 60% of wildlife has been wiped out during my lifetime. People are, and we are the solution too and not just the problem, no matter if we are talking about 9 million dead people from air pollution or the demise of our old trees and the destructive landgrab of our cruel and unsustainable agricultural industry.













I am despite the shortcomings of humanity, still hopeful that we will one day get to talk about our forlorn vampire trees, the ones that still sway in the wind, together with recovered packs of deer and wolves, European bison and soaring white-tailed eagles.













But whatever way the future tale of planet Earth will head in the far larger tome of the Universe, that is up to us, the shortcomings and brilliance of our still living breathing homidae species.

The Mouse In our Wall
We play in the snow, under the shooting star

 



Told to you, as I once told, a mind and girly soul, so beautiful.


Inside the walls of our homes, and lives. There are Undraped windows through which we see both in and out, and at night I look out and up with you.
A shooting star stirs and moves the northern lights. Like a spoon through water, it moves before our eyes. Clear as day yet slightly obfuscated through the sheets of glass, the world is silent and it could be a dream as I witness the star cut through the puffy clouds.

And at night.
Some other times, there we are, walking through life's small moments and we are holding hands.

Together, we stand outside having walked amongst the falling leafs and the subtle snow.
Rain or sunshine matters not.

Looking in, through the of night, all chilly frosty glass, the burning lamps the pleasant light and warmth that moves and lives inside.
Is it empty we ask out loud, or is there someone looking out? Back at us. Do they hear our silent minds, can they feel our burning soul and warming hands.

In between these two sides. Neither looking in or out. Or perhaps, they do them both all the time.

There live a gnarly little furry mouse that moves about with his love and all their friends.

At night, you can hear them talk and hug it out. They move, play and dart around, inside and outside the walls that people build. Sometimes they walk our floors, sitting near, our sleeping faces.
We kiss and make a cute little snowy angel. Your arms wisp around and I kiss your pretty lips, yet again.

And right there. In the corner of my eye. I swear the little mice sits right nearby. Looking out at us as we hug it out.
And perhaps he too thinks the very same. Looking out and about, at us and all the shooting stars.

    One of planet Earth´s most unique land-living animals still roaming about in the wild also happens to be one of the cutest and most enchanting, and gentle colossuses that have ever existed. Yet, somehow, despite the towering size and unique characteristics of these majestic critters they are also one of the lesser talked about wildlife stars. And so it happens that by now they are like so many other species highly endangered without anyone really paying attention.

    But perhaps that is the reward that life gave these majestic beings that float across the land they call home as if they are majestic land dwelling whales. A backseat in the human consciousness as we proceeded to decimate their global population with 40 or so % in less than 30 years.

    I have talked about telomeres in years past, and fitness too obviously :).
    But such is the world of fitness, science, and health, it often revisits old "truths" and sometimes upends them because our knowledge has deepened, while new studies at other times will simply fortify and acknowledge what we already knew to be true.
    So what will happen today as we travel back to the world of that peachy sounding telomeres thingy that keeps wiggling its cute little tail inside of us? Let us find out.

    For this particular study, published in European Heart Journal, Nov 2018, we´ll uncover what happens to the length of our telomeres when we do long distance endurance training, high-intensity sprint intervals, nothing at all or lift weights in a so-so way in the gym ( yeah, color me unimpressed by the strength plan in this study, but hold on to that thought as you read on because I will get back to the fairly inadequate strength training and why that too matters. ).
    The question, which option is the best for maintaining the length of our telomeres and what is the worst?.

    Nothing fancy or big worded to say today, I am just drinking some tasty fresh black coffee while various death metal songs keep pumping through my livingroom gear.
    Yes, what a glorious morning :).
    But while I am enjoying my morning routine, getting ready for the gym and my own workouts as well as the health and fitness regimes of today's PT clients I am also reading up on science and sustainability from around the world. And one of the pieces that stand out is a tonally laid-back piece by Swedish outlet DN. They spent the better part of a month or so following Swedish sustainability advocate Greta as she continues her quest to bring much-needed awareness to the sad state of the world and the essential, deep-rooted changes we as a species and global civilization urgently need to undertake.

    Time for a short one.
    Obesity is no friend of the bettering of our health and longevity.
    Just as how the old school act of serious bulking never did anyone's health and fitness levels any favors. And pointing this scientific reality out is not about fat shaming. It´s about helping the world and its individuals turn the tide toward better health, and better fitness. And doing so does not remove peoples individual right to pick whatever body size and fat percentage that they so prefer.
    My Question:.
    We already know that obesity ( and a fat powered high BMI ) increases unhealthy factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. And it often increases depression, drowsiness and general sedentary choices. Which indirectly leads to worse health in numerous ways. But if a person with a high fat powered BMI is deemed healthy as far as those traditional markers are concerned is excess fat itself still bad?
    Put in another way, will a higher amount of excess body fat still lead to worse health even if your bloodwork turns out ok and you do not feel depressed and drowsy and you do hit the gym?.

    You already know that keeping fit and lifting your weekly weights and doing your daily cardio is nothing but a rejuvenating choice. It's good for your strength, duh.. It is wondrously good for your harty heart health, and it aids your cognitive and creative processes. It scientifically speaking lowers depression and tardy drowsiness. And if you have been keeping up with me over the years, you also know that keeping fit on a regular weekly basis also lowers your physical age by quite a noticeable margin too.
    But even small ordinary things like taking a daily walk carries with it a huge life long health and fitness impact.

    And today, there´s officially a full-blown Autumn song playing out there in nature. Gorgeous and sunny, on a Sunday =). Wind free, except for the tiniest of breeze that you can almost not see or feel as it slowly makes it way through the crown of leaves that towers above.

    But it is, none the less, Autumn.
    The colors of the trees reveal it. The pale blue September moon that hangs high up in the middle of the day is another telltale.

    The science of health and fitness should always be your lifelong guide.



    Fitness is as wonderful for your health as it is for landing you a more sculpted and capable body over time.
    But that will never change that even fit people (quite a lot of them) are doing the right things for the wrong reasons. Case in point the fit and good looking girl you can see in the IG video I am linking to, she obviously trains hard and regular while being in great shape, and she does know quite a few things about the body and the science of staying healthy and fit.
    Which is wonderful on all counts.
    But like so many other gym goers she is seemingly misinformed about a few things too ( on the other hand, so are we all :P ). Allowing wrongful information and knowledge to shape her choices and the choices of other people that gulps up everything we fit people believe to be true. However, if you are willing to listen to it the beautiful science of health and fitness will guide you towards a better body and better health and better workouts if you pay attention to real fitness science instead of personal opinions. You see, there is nothing wrong with the exercises she is doing. But outside of the wonderful world of human anatomy, there is no such thing as an upper or lower butt muscle as far as your exterior appearance goes, nor is there a meaningful difference as far as your practical fitness capacity and workout goes.

    Planet Earth - studies & life in the Anthropocene.

    A new way of life is needed.



    But what is it exactly? And why is something that sounds so cute something truly terrible that we need to take seriously as a global whole.
    To most people, it is more than likely just another ridiculous phrase keyboard warriors throw around once a year while they too waste this world to the point of no return.
    But this ever-moving yearly event day is anything but deadly essential.

    Every year this day signals the point in that year where we have used up all the naturally replenishing resources of this planet.
    And beyond this point, the planet is losing its inventory for the next year(s) ahead and it's capacity to restock.

    Which if we are talking about corporations and business leaders is something that would cause pretty much every corporate leader out there to die from a heart attack if it persistently happened to their business. But when its Earth, people just shrug their mindless shoulders and look the other way as if the greenhouse we are subsisting in isn't the singular thing that feeds and house us all.

    The science of health and fitness should always be your gym guide.



    Right now, if you enter any given gym, the wonderful world of barbells will conjure up as many opinions as there are fitness girls on Instagram, no matter the subject.
    And plenty of opinions are exactly that, personal opinions, formed by peer pressure in the gym, on social media, or by fit vixens looking to make a bigger following by posting daily stuff which may or may not be factually correct.

    There are out of date school gym coaches still living in the past, badly informed parents, friends, big brothers, big sisters, commercial interests only looking out for the next conference call, as well as uninformed writers working for big tabloids which just happened to draw the assignment to make a puff piece on fitness.

    So let us instead look at science and what it actually has to teach us about the range of motion for any particular exercise. And for the purpose of this article, let us focus on a Squat centric use case since legs and ass are thankfully all the rage anyway :).

    'Today' (another today ) while enjoying my first cup of coffee standing outside on my sun-drenched porch, I could hear something sneakily make its way through the underbrush and thick tall grass and florals that intermix with the deep dark, and thankfully, untouched old forest at the edge of my property.

    Fast forward just a little bit and I could start to see the movement in the thin youngling trees and the tall flowers. Something was out there, touching here and there making the wild plants and florals sway as it drew nearer me.

    A growing number of people in the world adopt healthy, fit living by going increasingly more vegetarian for a long range of personal reasons and or due to scientific reasons. Some of those reasons often include the substantial increase in cancer and diabetes risk that eating red meat and highly processed foods causes, or the impossible mathematics behind an entire world eating ever higher amounts of meat, or the incredible amount of pollution that animal food production causes.

    And facts are, that all those reasons are equally good, sound and true, so it does not even matter why you do it. It is a good and healthy choice to eat less red meat, and by doing so you will contribute towards a healthier you, and a healthier world.

    It got nothing to do with prey and predatory fluctuations. And it got nothing to do with natural events and Earths naturally changing cycles.

    Which is why I have over the years pointed out that living in a sustainable way is ultimately all about health. Individual health & planetary health. People that are opting to eat shit just isn't healthy.
    Neither from a planetary or individual perspective.

    Just as how healthy fit people that´s living unsustainable, just isn't healthy living people either.

    Once we venture beyond the glorious realms of leg and glutes training, there is the never-ending hallway of kicking and boxing to explore and conquer.
    But what else lies beyond the joy of those fit & healthy cornerstones?.
    Well, if it was not obvious so far in life, martial arts and legs and glutes have their equal in the colossus that is weighted back training.
    And when it comes down to weighted back training, actually, when it comes down to working the upper body at all, there is one exercise which I will never hesitate to put front and center (together with deadlift), and that is 'Standing Barbell Row'.
    Here is my question:
    Standing Barbell Row will challenge and work you from top to toe.
    But can you list all of the muscles which you will activate when you do this bad boy in a properly challenging way?.

    Good and healthy vegetarian food is able to provide health & fitness improving nutrition for far more people, despite polluting much less and using up a lot less landmass vied towards animal farming.
    And you can quote me on that because that simple statement is 100% based on science & clear-cut facts instead of peoples personal opinions and conjecture.

    In fact, food production from animal farming is already using up 83% of our global agricultural land. Yet, it is only managing to deliver about 18% of the calories we consume. And does that situation not sound completely unsustainable and fool-hearted to maintain?.

You know damn well that those leg days are crucial for the health and wellness of your lower back and abs too. And it sure does tax your heart and metabolic functions too. However, let us go upstairs towards our brainy area with this question.

    Healthy living is nothing but the science of life.



    With the rising tide of the Baltic sea far beneath me, I towered the surrounding world.
    Looking out from the crest of the Scandinavian coastline. This was still a place lost in time and mist. A mountain entirely dressed in green and trees, moss and berries, sand and soil, and it is, as much a mountainous castle growing ever taller as it is the place where salt and cold black water comes crashing in to embrace the land of the Vikings.

    But that is not all this week is all about. We also have the endangered wildlife day, which happened on May 18, and birthday number 70 for IUCN. And, as such this entire week represents an opportunity for each of us to make it a healthy fit day for the entire planet and our individual self.

    Legs and ass and back. That is the holy trinity ( together with the fourth pillar, our abs ) of building a strong and capable and athletic body.
    But what about the makeup of our upper legs?
    We have the backside of our legs, which we call the hamstrings, and on the front, there´s the thing most people simply call the quads.
    But let us dig deeper down into those mighty looking quadriceps and the rest of the anterior side of our legs.
    Here is my question:
    Can you specify which muscles make up the bulk of what we call our quadriceps and anterior leg muscles?.
