Nikon D500 Video
The Science of a creative life
One minute video taking a look at the new Nikon D500 and how it holds up as the presumably class leading Dx camera. In short: Great Af, Body build, Iso, Image quality, burst performance and Dr.

Nikon D500, class leading Dx camera or not?

[ Nikon reigns supreme? ]
There are of course as many ways to weight and judge cameras as there are photographers. We all, each and every one of us has different needs, and thus we weight different strengths and weaknesses and characteristics according to our own personal views and needs. But generally speaking Nikon has been the image quality leader amongst dx cameras for quite some time now and the new Nikon D500 is not a letdown at all. It is however not a straight up improvement on all areas of photography and image quality compared to the Nikon D7200. On the other hand, few incremental updates ever manage to improve on every aspect there is.
And that needs to be said, these days all cameras, dx or ff are already so good since several generations at producing high-quality photos that upgrading your camera has very little today to do with improving the final image quality in leaps and bounds. It´s more about your own personal needs and taste and improving upon small aspects of your shooting conditions and workflow. The Nikon D500 for instance sports a very robust body, so if outdoors shooting no matter place and weather, is your interest, do know that it´s a big step up in build quality compared to the D7xxxx series (which was already good and sturdy).
If sports and wildlife is your thing, the speedy and accurate AF will not let you down in any way there is (big difference compared to previous Nikon Dx cameras). Neither will the greatly improved fps and buffer. And the new snapbridge wifi/Bluetooth workflow on the D5 and D500 is also a solid improvement over previous dx and ff cameras.
What it does not do however is break new real life image quality grounds.
Yes, the ISO go way higher but in real life photography, I do not see it as a giant leap forward. It is a step forward, just not as big as it sounds on paper.
Dynamic range and low iso is a wash, in my humble opinion, compared to the previous Nikon D7xxxx cameras. So neither a step in any direction at least not in practical use, on paper some could nitpick and claim that the D7200 is actually the better camera if you are shooting at iso 100, but in practical reality, the difference is so abysmal that you will not see a difference either way.
In other, words if you need the solid feature improvements or the 4k UHD video, pick it up, if not, enjoy what you have.
Anyway, that is my opinion, now watch the video from dpreview.com and shoot some photos :).
