At the crossroads of the Anthropocene.
May 22 is 'The International Day of Biological Diversity'.
A day which, is by now, our essential every day reality.
May 22 is both a perfectly ordinary Tuesday in your life and the global 'International Day for Biological Diversity'.
But that is not all this week is all about. We also have the endangered wildlife day, which happened on May 18, and birthday number 70 for IUCN.
And, as such this entire week represents an opportunity for each of us to make it a healthy fit day for the entire planet and our individual self.
Also, if you are present in the incredibly lush and beautiful high coast area of Scandinavia, Sweden next Tuesday you are more than welcome to
join me and my coworker from Scandinavian.Fitness for a sweaty fit workout at the gym, lifting weights and grunting at Friskis, Örnsköldsvik at 0730.
Once we are done at the gym, we will head outside for a walk at 0830 and hopefully enjoy beautiful weather together with the pristine nature of Scandinavia.

[ Oceans run the risk of having more total weight of plastic than fish.]

And that too is nothing but progressive daily health.
Which makes the case of making sure we all get to live on a planet that is enriched with thriving nature and wildlife a crucial case for anyone
looking to make their own life and others more healthy and fit.
Now that you know how I will be enjoying this essential day, the real question is how you will appreciate and improve the health of our planet?
Or were you simply unaware of this important day ( and week )?.
Quite a lot of people are :), so if that is the case, no need to feel left out, but participate anyway.
Because the state and health of our planet is the state and health of each and every one of us. We need our soil to become better and healthier, free of short-term harvesting and pesticides.
And we need the water in our lakes and oceans to remain pristine and healthy both for human consumption and for all the animals and plants that depend on it.
After all, we all live and die within the same more or less closed off planetary ecosystem ( Earth actually spray organic matter into space as well as receive organic matter from it, so while it is not strictly speaking a perfectly closed off system, it is very much a singular planetary ecosystem with finite resources and biological metrics which needs to be sustained within certain thresholds. ). And as such, we all depend on that singular ecosystem being properly maintained, in order for our individual self and the entire planet to remain healthy.
Numbers
[ from planet Earth 2018.]
We have previously talked about quite a lot of unhealthy planetary markers this year. So no need to repeat the amount of plastic in our oceans, or the number of people that die prematurely and completely unnecessary due to modern day pollution.
And there is no need to talk about the sad state of poaching and land encroachment and how that is wiping out wild Tigers, and Elephants and Lions in Africa and Asia.
But as always, there are more topics to lift up and more conversations which we need to have because, while we are living in a wonderful world, wonderful and quite enchanted, it is also a world that is
incredibly out of shape. And it is the human race which stubbornly keeps making it so.
Be it the reckless behavior of refusing to accept basic science, cause, and consequences. Just as how some just do not want to admit that they too abide by the same biological realities as the rest of us do.
Or the sad countries that continue to uphold the fossil fuel industry at the expense of everybody else instead of pushing towards clean energy.
So, if you are looking for simple reasons why this day and week matters to you.
There is the Amur Leopard, of whom we only have 30 to 50 individuals left in the wild ( in the entire world ).
There is the case of Iceland ( one of only 3 countries in the world still killing whales commercially speaking ) resuming its annual whale hunting of the fin whale, a whale species which we only have about 40 000 individuals left.
There is the ancient Scandinavian Musk Ox, which still lives wild and free in our incredible Norse corner of the world. But it too is under siege.
Under siege by the unsustainable human species.
There is the great Scandinavian Wolves.
Which too are threatened by close-minded people which insist that this almost none existant wild and undomesticated 'big dog' species is a
serious threat despite doing it's very best to avoid all confrontations and encounters with us Scandinavians.
Our Scandinavian wolf is a beautiful and essential Apex predator of whom we only have a few hundred left in all of Scandinavia. And this is happening in one of Europes
largest and best-preserved wildlife regions ( with Europes absolutely lowest population density numbers, unless we also consider all of Russia when
talking about Europe. )
Earth is also this incredibly lush blue marble where Whales are actually starving to death from human-made plastic litter clogging up their intestines.
Such as the case was for a young sperm whale which was discovered earlier this year with 60 lbs of plastic waste stuck inside its tummy.
All these things, and many more, such as the state of bumblebees, and European farmland birds,
flying insects and the changing climate, the state of polar bears and the water beneath our earthly crust remain not only directly linked to our own behavior. But all these things are also, directly and indirectly, impacting our own health and wellbeing.
And so, all this and so much more is the reason why this week and may 22 matters for all of us.
You do not even have to like animals and nature. It´s not a question about enjoying nature or not.
But it is a question of reality down here on planet Earth. So unless you hate your own health and wellbeing and the health and wellbeing of everybody else too,
this week and all the other planetary friendly & sustainable initiatives like it matters for your health and well-being,
because no one can outrun and ignore the impact the health of our planet has on our own individual health and how we
are all shaping and changing the health of our own self and the entire planet by our own daily choices.
Be it through clean energy or eating more vegetarian food instead of consuming ever more red meat and other less sustainable food choices.
Our planet and our body, and the state of each are connected to our own choices and equally shaped by our daily lifestyle.

“I’m very disappointed. This decision is not based on real market needs and is not in line with public opinion polls on whaling, which doesn’t belong in modern times.”
